The period drama, based on the play by Ivan Turgenev and its Broadway adaptation, is being introduced to buyers at the Cannes market.Michael Rymer, the primetime Emmy nominee whose credits include American Horror Story, Battlestar Galactica, Hannibal and Jessica Jones, is set to direct upcoming period feature Fortune's Fool, based on Ivan Turgenev's multi-award winning 18th century Russian play.

Steven Chester Price is producing the project for TPSC Films, the sister banner of the Traveling Picture Show Company, alongside Attention Seeker Entertainment’s Richard Alan Reid and Michael Philip. Benedick Bates and TPSC Films’ Kevin Matusow and Carissa Buffel are exec producing.

Double Dutch International will be introducing the film to buyers at the Cannes market.

Adapted from Mike Poulton's award-winning Broadway play by Benedick Bates, Mike Poulton and Adam Sholder, Fortune’s Fool follows a budding statesman who discovers that secrets and politics are not confined to the city life, when he and his new aristocratic wife retreat to her country estate for their honeymoon. Class-levels clash as their arrival jolts the residents and their many servants out of their tranquility.

"Turgenev’s story is filled with passion, pain and courage," said Rymer, who also helmed 1999's In Too Deep starring Omar Epps, LL Cool J and Stanley Tucci. "It’s a rich and nuanced portrait of a soulful man, brought low by life, but whose kindness and dignity cause us to love him and root for his survival. It’s a simple but emotionally powerful story that will take audiences on a wonderful emotional rollercoaster. I’m excited to be bringing this classic of Russian literature to the big screen."

Added Double Dutch's Ron Moring: "A universal story, an award winning play, an award winning director, Fortune’s Fool should find its audience worldwide."

Traveling Picture Show's upcoming slate also includes comedy drama Divine Access, being released domestically on Friday, Emma Roberts-starring The Blackcoat's Daughter, picked up by A24, and writer J.T. Petty's My Only Sunshine.
